The F/A-18 Hornet is a versatile, twin-engine, all-weather aircraft serving both as a fighter and an attack platform. Introduced in 1978, it became the U.S. Navy’s first multirole combat aircraft, replacing the F-4 Phantom and A-7 Corsair II. Capable of performing fighter escort, fleet air defense, interdiction, and close air support missions, the Hornet has proven its effectiveness in various combat scenarios, including Operation Desert Storm. Its robust design allows it to sustain damage and continue flying, exemplifying its durability and reliability. The F/A-18 Hornet remains a critical component of Marine Corps tactical aviation and will continue to serve until its planned retirement in 2030.
